Described as giving performances that are ‘larger than life, with boundless emotion’ (Limelight), Waynne Kwon enjoys a varied musical career as a soloist, chamber and orchestral musician. Born in South Korea and raised in Australia, he began learning the cello at the age of three.
Waynne studied with Hannah Roberts at the Royal Northern College of Music, where he received his Bachelors and Masters in Music, along with a Postgraduate Diploma Advanced Studies in Performance. During his time at the RNCM Waynne was awarded the RNCM Gold Medal and the Sir John Barbirolli Cello Prize and won the RNCM Concerto Competition. He has won numerous awards at competitions such as the London Festival Orchestra Muriel Taylor Scholarship, Bromsgrove International Music Competition, Tunnell Trust Music Club Award and Australian Young Performer’s Award. He is very thankful for the support of the Haworth Trust, the Biddy Baxter and John Hosier Music Trust, the Countess of Munster Musical Trust, Help Musicians UK, the Australian Elizabethan Theatre Trust, the Australian Music Foundation and the Tait Memorial Trust.
Waynne is currently Sub-Principal Cello of the London Philharmonic Orchestra. He has appeared as Guest Principal with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Asian Philharmonic Orchestra (under Maestro Myung-Whun Chung) Philharmonia Orchestra, and Manchester Camerata, as well as Guest Co-Principal with the London Symphony Orchestra.
As a keen chamber musician, Waynne performs recitals regularly in venues such as the Wigmore Hall, Stoller Hall, Bridgewater Hall, Seoul Arts Centre and Sydney Opera House with pianist Victor Lim. He was also a founding member of the Louko Piano Trio.
