Born in 1989 in the South of France, Dorran Alibaud has established a distinguished career as both an elite cellist and a visionary artistic leader. He has served as Guest Principal Cellist with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, NDR Radiophilharmonie, Les Siècles, and the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, among many others. His extensive international performing career includes tours and collaborations with the Utopia Orchestra, Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Opéra de Paris, Kammerorchester Basel, Staatskapelle Dresden, SWR Symphonieorchester, Orchestre Romantique et Révolutionnaire, and the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse.
Beginning in 2011, at the invitation of Claudio Abbado, Dorran joined his Orchestra Mozart in Bologna. Throughout his career, he has collaborated closely with the world’s most renowned conductors, including Pierre Boulez, Bernard Haitink, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Herbert Blomstedt, Riccardo Chailly, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Teodor Currentzis, and Antonio Pappano. His profound affinity for the orchestral repertoire was forged during his years as Principal Cellist of the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester (GMJO); his relationship with the institution continues today, having served as a tutor board member since 2021.
Dorran’s musical foundation began in France under Annie Cochet and Philippe Muller, where he was awarded first prizes. In 2009, he joined Jean-Guihen Queyras’s class in Stuttgart, following him to Freiburg im Breisgau in 2011, and completed his formal studies in Berlin working closely with Wolfgang Boettcher. His artistic development was further enriched by masterclasses with masters such as Frans Helmerson, Anner Bylsma, Miklós Perényi, Clemens Hagen, Gary Hoffman, and the Artemis Quartett.
Following his tenure as Principal Cellist of the Norwegian Radio Orchestra with conductor Petr Popelka, Dorran transitioned into high-level artistic leadership. He is currently the Artistic Director of the prestigious Norwegian elite conducting programs Dirigentforum part of Dirigentløftet, as well as the soloist program PODIUM at Talent Norge. Under his direction, participants in these programs currently hold assistant conductor positions with orchestras such as the Berliner Philharmoniker, The Cleveland Orchestra, the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester, and the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra. He has formed partnerships between his programs and the Staatskpelle Dresden, Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Canada’s National Arts Centre Orchestra and Iceland Symphony Orchestra.
Additionally, Dorran built high-end masterclasses featuring mentors such as Daniel Harding, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Thomas Adès, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Daniele Gatti, Alan Gilbert, Sakari Oramo, Leif Ove Andsnes, and Eva Ollikainen.
Beyond his pedagogical and directorial work, Dorran regularly advises world-class orchestras and major artist agencies on strategic and artistic matters. He performs on an anonymous Venetian cello from 1700 and is an ambassador for Florian Leonhard Fine Violins.
