Classic Cello Prizewinner Francesco Stefanelli Advances to Second Round of the George Enescu International Competition
The announcement places the Italian cellist among an elite group of just twelve competitors chosen to advance from an initial field of fifty cellists from around the world. Widely regarded as one of the most significant classical music competitions in Europe, the George Enescu International Competition attracts exceptional young artists and serves as a launching platform for many international careers.
The second round, held at the historic Romanian Athenaeum on 2–3 September, features recital performances of up to 45 minutes. Competitors are required to present a demanding programme including a compulsory work, a major cello sonata by composers such as Brahms, Britten, Debussy or Shostakovich, and a virtuosic showpiece selected from a distinguished repertoire list.
Stefanelli joins an international roster of advancing candidates representing France, South Korea, the United States, Switzerland, China and Italy. Following the second round, only six musicians will be selected to proceed to the semi-finals, with the competition culminating in a final round on 7 September.
This latest achievement follows a highly successful season for the young Italian cellist. Earlier this year, Stefanelli was awarded Fourth Prize at the Classic Cello International Competition in London, where he distinguished himself among a strong field of international competitors. He also performed at the final of the World’s Biggest Stage Competition 2026 in New York, gaining exposure before a global audience through a live broadcast by The Violin Channel.
The 2026 George Enescu International Competition jury is chaired by legendary Finnish cellist Arto Noras and includes an internationally respected panel featuring Claudio Bohórquez, Marin Cazacu, Enrico Dindo, Frans Helmerson, Valentin Răduțiu, Inbal Segev, and other distinguished musicians and industry figures.
Being selected among the twelve cellists advancing to the second round represents another significant milestone in Francesco Stefanelli’s artistic development and confirms his growing presence on the international cello scene.
