Classic Cello Prizewinner Francesco Stefanelli Announces Debut Duo Album on Da Vinci Classics
The recording, made in collaboration with Italian pianist Nicola Pantani, brings together two landmark works of the cello repertoire: Frédéric Chopin's Cello Sonata in G minor, Op. 65 and George Enescu's Cello Sonata No. 2 in C major, Op. 26 No. 2. The album was released by Da Vinci Classics in July 2026, with the physical edition issued on 17 July 2026 and the digital release following on 24 July 2026.
The project explores the evolution of the cello from the late Romantic world of Chopin to the rich and highly individual musical language of Enescu. Through these two sonatas, Stefanelli and Pantani present a programme that highlights both lyrical expression and chamber music dialogue, while tracing the changing role of the cello across two centuries of musical history.
The recording marks an important artistic achievement for the San Marino-born cellist, who has already established himself on the international competition circuit. According to his official George Enescu International Competition biography, the album represents Stefanelli's debut duo recording, further expanding a discography that already includes recordings for both Da Vinci Classics and Naxos.
Stefanelli's collaboration with Nicola Pantani is the result of a long-standing musical partnership. The duo regularly performs together and attracted international attention after winning Second Prize at the 2025 International Chamber Music Competition Pinerolo e Torino – Città Metropolitana. Their shared artistic vision is reflected throughout the album, which showcases both musicians' commitment to chamber music at the highest level.
The release follows a remarkable year for Stefanelli, who was awarded Fourth Prize and a Special Prize at the Classic Cello International Competition in London, advanced at the George Enescu International Competition, and appeared at major international events including the World's Biggest Stage Competition in New York.
With the launch of Chopin, Enescu: Between Song, Counterpoint and Memory, Francesco Stefanelli reaches another significant milestone in his artistic career, bringing his musicianship to audiences worldwide through a recording that celebrates two masterpieces of the cello repertoire.
